My flower scarf is almost done and I finally made a flower (actually I made two!) with the correct number of petals. The reason I was screwing up was I was using the hook and yarn like I use my needles and yarn for knitting, I was working tightly and using my fingers to wrap the yarn. To crochet, it works so much better if you make your chain loosely and just use the hook to twist into the yarn then pull the loops through each other.
