Lesson Three: Get to know the Singer 500a Rocketeer

A few years ago a woman gave me her Singer 500a "Rocketeer" sewing machine that folds into a table. It didn't come with a manual and my only experience with sewing machines was in 6th grade home economics. I put the sewing machine in my basement thinking, "I'll learn to sew as soon as my vacation starts". Time passed and I forgot about the Rocketeer. I got pregnant, then had the baby. Schwa built a new room in the basement and my stuff got moved around. Once I recovered from the c-section, I decided to build up my art studio and I rediscovered the Singer. It reminded me of the clothes my friend David Gerbstadt hand makes and I felt inspired to try making something on my own. I tried threading the machine but couldn't figure out where or in what direction to put the thread. I did figure out how to thread the bobbin up top by running the thread from the spool onto the metal bobbin case. I called up a friend who made a quilt for me, she asked what kind of machine it was and came over with some directions for it. I thought that was pretty amazing because I spent almost an hour searching for directions online. She showed me how to thread it and showed me how to use the different settings. I made a pillow for my pillow room. It actually was very easy to use. The only thing we couldn't figure out was how to reverse it. I could only reverse use the hand wheel but there must be another way that I'm missing. I'll post pictures of pillows or clothes that I make as i make them.

I dunno if this is too late or not, but there is an alternate threading that bypasses the "thread control", here: http://www.tandtrepair.com/SlantOMatics/Knit_Kit_Threading_Chart.pdf
and a ton of info at the site.
